Although television was the main springboard for growth in the 1990s, the new economics of sports-business puts sports stadia at the heart of developmental issues in the sector. As well as ticketing, a stadium is a very effective tool that enables resources to be diversified (hospitality, catering, merchandising and naming rights, etc.) and an economic model which has too often been unpredictable and tele-dependent to be rectified. Moreover, from the local authorities point of view, a stadium or a large sports hall could be useful facilities for the area in which they are built.
France, where sport has only recently became a true social activity and economic sector in its own right, has some ground to make up in this field. This could perhaps be achieved with the arrival of a new generation of sports stadia, which have, at last, been designed as real profit centres.
It is still necessary to train professionals in specific skills, in order to give the sports movement the opportunity to negotiate better at this decisive point in its development.
With this University Diploma, CDES, with over 30 years’ experience in training in the sector, wanted to bring a global and concrete vision to the legal, economic, managerial, financial and commercial questions connected with building, managing and developing sports stadia.
Intended for students having done four years further study after the Baccalaureate, the Stadium Manager University Diploma is a professional university degree awarded by the University of Limoges.
Started in 2007, the Stadium Manager University Diploma is intended for professionals and operates in partnership with, and with the support of:
The European Stadium Manager Association, which is an association of managers of sports stadia on the European level.
The French Basketball federation and the National Basketball League.
The French Football Federation and the Professional Football League.
The French Rugby Federation and the National Rugby League.
The National Handball League.
On the international level, the European Rugby Cup, FIBA and UEFA also lend their support.
The educational content has been developed in close collaboration with different partners. The twelve sessions, spread over two years, take place:
mainly in famous national sports facilities (e.g. Stade de France and Bercy, etc.) or in Paris, in the premises of the associated professional federations and leagues or at the Maison du Sport Français (which hosts the French National Olympic Committee) or in the major French sports stadia;
more occasionally, at the Centre for the Law and Economics of Sport (CDES), in the University of Limoges;
and, at least once during the training period, in a leading European sports stadium in England, Germany or Spain, etc.
Candidates must, on the one hand, have a Bachelor’s Degree (or, failing that, have sufficient professional experience to apply for training at a level equivalent to four years further education after the Baccalaureate) and offer one of the following profiles:
Manager of a sports stadium;
Administrative director, Operations Manager of a sports stadium or Head of Security of a sports organisation (club, league or federation, etc.) involved in professional basketball, football or rugby;
