CDES Conferences
The Centre for the Law and Economics of Sport has been famous since its creation in 1978 for being very close to the sports movement. Along with regularly organised seminars, the contributions of its experts in different federal commissions embody this closeness.
These seminars are considered to be places of real discussion and debate and are organised in different places, in different formats. The challenge is to facilitate the intermingling of the actors involved and the interchange of ideas.
Seminars involving cdes, cnosf, the cour de cassation and the council of state
The principle – These events are intended to be the opposite of the typical event where just business cards are exchanged! During these seminars, the high quality of the contributions is obvious. Before the day, each speaker produces a text as it will appear in the proceedings. The oral presentation is, therefore, a summary of the chapter of the collective work that is prepared at the same time.
Previous seminars – Three seminars in this format have already been organised at the Court of Cassation:
-
The first was at the instigation of the “Chaire Régulation” of Sciences Po, Paris, CDES and the Court of Cassation and dealt with competition law.
-
The second was devoted to dispute resolution in sport.
-
The third and last seminar to date took place at the Council of State on June, 7 2013 and was devoted to the fundamental question of the integrity of sports competitions.
The desport seminar
The concept – It was created by Wladimir Andreff, but then was taken over by CDES in 2009. Thanks to the partnership with CNOSF, the concept has evolved to become a bridge between the academic world and the sports movement.
State of research – Four times per year, sport economists from France and Europe gather to discover and debate research topics from two of their peers (during the morning).
Different points of view – The afternoons are dedicated to exchanges with an actor in the field. Recently, national technical directors from football and basketball gave an overview of training centres and young players (in football), as well as the international challenges arising from the management of NBA franchises (in basketball); Joel Maxcy, an American academic researcher gave a presentation of the organisation of university sport, etc.
THE International association of sports economists seminars
CDES is the co-founder of the International Association of Sports Economists, Jean-François Brocard and Eric Barget are active contributors. Every year, this expert association organises a conference which takes place alternatively in Europe and North America.
Different themes related to sport are discussed:
- Competitive balance
- The economics of professional leagues
- Labour economics
- Industrial organisation in sport
- Consumer demand
- Governance and finance
- The economics of events and facilities
- Sustainable development and tourism
- Cost-benefit analysis
- The economics of elite sport and talent spotting
- Economic malfunctions (doping, corruption, match-fixing, and illegal betting)
- The economics of participating and volunteering, etc.
